Yamaha MOXF-6 Hidden Test Menu

Introduction:

Recently I read about a YouTube Video that outlined a hidden test menu inside the MOXF-6. To activate it you need to hold down certain keys whilst powering up the unit.

The test menu has 40+ sub menus where various functions of the unit can be tested. This includes the panel buttons, internal RAM & ROM memory, LEDs, outputs, encoders and pedal inputs.

I have explored each menu item and took a photo of what to expect. Some of the functions I could not test due to the absence of certain pedals, MIDI leads and USB connection.

Before entering the Test Menu please be aware that the settings and voices in the MOXF may get initialized during the tests.

Startup

To activate the test menu hold down the three keys indicated below and power up the unit.
The keys are C#2, F2, G#2.

Wait for the Test Menu to appear after the Splash Screen.

The three options are selected using the panel buttons:

  • [ENTER] brings you to a sub-menu where all the different tests can be executed.
  • [STORE] resets the unit to the Factory defaults.
  • [EXIT] leaves the Test Program and reboots the MOXF

Test Functions

Press [ENTER] to go into the individual test menus.
Pressing [INC] and [DEC] selects which test you wish to run.

Note: An asterisk (*) will be displayed to the left of the test number to indicate that the test passed.

#001 – Version
Shows the firmware versions001_Version001_Version_Go

#002 – ROM 1

#007 – TG

#008 – Pitch

#009 – Output R
This will sound a tone on the Right Output until you press [EXIT]009_Output_R009_Output_R_Testing

#010 – Output L

#011 – Line Out Mute
This will sound a tone. Toggle the Mute with [INC] and [DEC]011_Line_Out_Mute011_Line_Out_Mute_Off011_Line_Out_Mute_On

#012 – Mute
This will sound a tone. Toggle the Mute with [INC] and [DEC]012_Mute012_Mute_Off012_Mute_On

#013 – Switch and LED Test
This will test all the panel buttons starting with [AD INPUT] on the left side
and finishing with [SOLO] in the right side.

#014 – All LED On
All panel LEDs will be on until you press [EXIT]

#015 – Red LED On

#016 – Green LED On

#017 – Orange LED On

#018 – LCD On
All pixels on the LCD will be black until you press [EXIT]018_LCD_On018_LCD_On_GO

#019 – LCD Off
All pixels on the LCD will be clear until you press [EXIT]

#020 – Slider

#021 – Encoder
This tests all nine rotary encoders on the panel. Move each encoder clockwise then anticlockwise to make all the displayed values read OK.021_Encoders021_Encoders_Testing_01021_Encoders_Testing_02021_Encoders_End

#022 – Pitch Bend

#023 – Modulation Wheel

#024 – Foot Controller
I did not have a foot controller so I could not run this test.024_Foot_Controller024_Foot_Controller_Go

#025 – Foot Switch

#026 – Sustain

#027 – Mic Input

#028 – Line Input
I did not have a Line Input attached so I could not run this test.028_Line_Input028_Line_Input_Go

#029 – MIDI
It is unclear what this test wants you to do with the MIDI sockets.
Without plugging anything it it fails with NG.029_MIDI029_MIDI_Go

#030 – USB Connect
I did not have the USB connected so I could not run this test.030_USB_Connect030_USB_Connect_Go

031 – USB Function

032 – USB Storage

#033 – Keyboard Type
This seems to detect the type of keyboard. There are no key tests.033_Keyboard_Type033_Keyboard_Type_ID

#034 – Expansion Module
This tests the optional FLASH Expansion board.
(1) The first result NG NO EXPANSION MODULE was run without the module installed.
(2) The second result came when I installed a MUTEC 2GB module. This also showed NG along with IC11 / IC51. IC11 & IC51 are two of the Flash ICs on the original Yamaha Expansion module. The Mutec board has Flash ICs twice the capacity so maybe this is why the test fails, or the Flash ICs give out a different manufacturer & model ID.034_Expansion_Module_FLASH034_Expansion_Module_FLASH_Go034_Expansion_Module_FLASH_Mutec_2GB_Fitted

#035 – ROM 2 (Full)

#039 – PANEL A (Sw)
This tests the left side panel switches only.

#040 – PANEL B (Sw)
This tests the center panel switches only.

#041 – PANEL C (Sw)
This tests the right panel switches only.

#042 – PANEL A (Enc)
This tests the eight left panel encoders.
Move each encoder clockwise and anticlockwise to make all the displayed values read OK.

#043 – PANEL B (Enc)
This tests the single encoder wheel on the middle panel.

#044 – Power Off
This test will actually switch the unit off.
You will need to toggle the rear power switch to bring the unit back on again.
The unit will reboot normally to you will need to hold down the three keys to access the test program again.

#045 – Output Full R
This drives the Right Output at max loudness with a test tone.
It will be very loud so adjust the volume before starting.
Press [EXIT] to quit the test.

#045 – Output Full L
This drives the Left Output at max loudness with a test tone.
It will be very loud so adjust the volume before starting.

#047 – Factory Set

#048 – Exit
